(Toronto) – Aviva Investors, the global asset management business of Aviva plc, announces it has launched an open-ended, short-term private credit fund for institutional investors in Canada, with initial investor commitments of CAD$230m.
The Aviva Investors Short Term Private Debt Fund (‘the Fund’) is designed to provide a diversified private debt portfolio, aiming to deliver risk-adjusted returns through disciplined underwriting, capital preservation and diversified sources of income. This will include opportunities across a wide range of private debt sectors. including real estate debt, infrastructure debt, private corporate debt, and structured finance. The Fund will also have the ability to allocate to public debt where appropriate to support long-term performance and will be hedged to CAD$.
To support Canadian insurers, Aviva Investors will also launch a rated feeder for the strategy, structured for general account balance sheet investing in line with insurer governance frameworks.
Investments will primarily provide exposure to opportunities in the UK, European, US and Canadian markets. In real estate debt this will include those supporting the acquisition, development, refinancing or recapitalisation of real estate assets for commercial borrowers. In infrastructure debt, the Fund will target opportunities that support essential public services, including energy, utilities, transportation, social and digital infrastructure, as well as ports and airports. Private corporate debt exposure will include private placements in a variety of sectors and issuers, ranging from investment grade borrowers to SMEs including corporates, corporate infrastructure, social housing and quasi-sovereign organisations. Structured finance investments made by the Fund will target bespoke financing solutions across public and private securitisation, loans and bonds, hedged using either a guarantee or insurance policy, and other asset-related financing.
The launch comes amid high demand from institutional investors for investment strategies with the potential to capture defensive income and downside resilience, which are increasingly appealing against the current macro backdrop. The 2026 edition of Aviva Investors’ Private Markets Study found that almost half (49 per cent) of global institutional investors expect asset‑backed lending to deliver the most attractive risk‑adjusted returns within private debt, closely followed by opportunistic and distressed debt (48 per cent).
The Short-Term Private Debt Fund is the second fund Aviva Investors has launched specifically for the Canadian market in recent weeks. It follows the creation of a pooled fund for institutional investors and wealth management firms in Canada, providing them with access to its flagship Global Equity Income strategy.
Duane Green, CEO, Americas, at Aviva Investors, said:
“Globally, institutional investors continue to show strong demand for private debt investment strategies where they can benefit from the illiquidity premia on offer. This is very much the case in Canada which is home to some of the largest and most sophisticated asset owners. Our new Short-Term Private Debt Fund is designed to give institutional investors in the region access to investment opportunities across the UK and Europe, as well as the US and Canada. It also further demonstrates the importance we place on clients in the region and our ambition to provide a range of funds that reflect their future needs. We believe through careful underwriting and portfolio construction, this fund can provide Canadian investors with additional diversified return drivers and downside protection, while supporting their long-term investment outcomes."
